Reading Pirate Latitude

The reading of Mr. Crichton’s work is always a pleasant journey filled with intensity and surprise along the way, and it is the same as always for the reading of PL, the work based on recovery of scripts post Mr. Crichton’s mortality in Nov. 2008.

One of the best part of Mr. Crichton’s works, unanimously since the very beginning of his published work with the “Case of Need”, was the use and selection of vocabularies. Always ample with conversation and physical movement, Michael’s works had always presented his peculiar sense towards the word usages in particularly with verb. This tradition had been carried on within PL, in which Captain Hunter, his crew on board of the Cassandra and fellow protagonists continued their adventures in the colonized territory of Jamaica back in the 17th century.

Frankly, the story line could barely be called novelty as PL is the story developed in the New World 400 years before, which no doubt reminds the readers with Jack Sparrow and his related crews. Convincible, Mister Crichton must been aware of the this coincidence while he worked on PL, and therefore, there is a captain totally different than Sparrow surfaced in our minds. Well educated but brave, crafty but never lose his sense of justice, Charles Hunter gave the reader another type of choice for a English Captain living the New World in the mid 17th century.

One other feature that commonly notice by readers is the ending of PL, which wrap-up in a state of haste. Unlike many of his previous stories, which always had the incidents developed gradually and background information fully interpreted, PL and some of her passages came to an end in almost unexpected way. Like in the final part when Commander Scott was unhorsed and suffocate to death, the entire movement took only about 10 lines, which was way oversimplified for a common reader.

Overall speaking, if you are a fan of MC, PL is not the one to disappoint you. As a work MC has planned and anticipated to work on for over 15 years, PL is another splendid story with his hallmark printed on.

The Rise of the Planet Apes
